The Cariboo Regional District board adopted a noise control bylaw for Area H, which includes the Forest Grove and Canim Lake area, in an effort to reduce conflicts between neighbours.

The bylaw gives the Regional District the authority to impose fines of $100 to $2,000 for excessive noise that is deemed by the RCMP to be disturbing the quiet, rest, enjoyment or comfort of neighbouring properties. The bylaw also limits construction hours to between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.; however it offers an exemption for emergency situations and agricultural operations.

The bylaw will not impact businesses, including industrial operations and resorts, that are properly zoned and conducting normal business activities.

Noise regulation bylaws have been in place in portions of the north and central Cariboo since 1996.

FENCES A PRIORITY

ON RAIL LINES

A resolution received unanimous support to write a letter to the federal and provincial transportation authorities urging them to require rail companies to cooperate with adjacent landholders on issues of livestock fencing and weed control.

To further press the issue, Board members will discuss the situation with provincial transportation Minister Kevin Falcon at the UBCM convention in October. Local concerns were raised as a result of recent actions by CN Rail to no longer assist with the maintenance of livestock fences. CN's process for dealing with livestock killed on the rail lines was also questioned.
