Dhaka, Aug 8 2011

The Department of Environment (DoE) has penalized four firms at Gulshan Avenue as the noise from their generators had become a nuisance for the residents of the area.

Acting on complaints, DoE director Munir Chowdhury on Monday summoned officials of Hosna Centre at 106, Gulshan Avenue and three firms – Banglalink, IPDC of Bangladesh and Nandan Megashop – renters in the building, and fined them, a press statement said.

They had installed the generators without prior permission of the department and those generators were produced sound beyond the limit permissible for a mixed area, it added.

Of them, Hosna Centre was fined Tk 300,000, Banglalink Tk 200,000, IPDC Tk 50,000 and Nandan Megashop Tk 100,000.

Residents complained that they could not sleep well due to the loud noise. An old woman of the area had to leave the area due to the sound, the statement said.

The firms were also instructed to ensure all preventive measures to address the pollution by Aug 14, otherwise the generators would be seized and legal steps would be initiated.

They, however, promised to fix the problem immediately and install new generators.

When 60 decibel is appropriate in line with the law, the statement said Hosna Tower was emitting 101 decibel, the two generators of Banglalink 84 and 90 respectively, IPDC 81 and Nandan was reportedly emitting 89 decibel sound.
