Less noise, traffic in Thane during feast

With the civic body and police commissionerate assuring the Bombay high court (HC) of compliance with noise regulation and traffic laws during festivities, Thane residents can expect less noise and traffic snarls during Ganeshotsav this year. Thane resident Dr Mahesh Bedekar had filed a

public interest litigation (PIL) raising concerns over the failure of the authorities in ensuring the implementation of noise control regulations, and unauthorised use of public roads for celebrations such as dahi handi.
Responding to the PIL, counsel for Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), Ram Apte, submitted a copy of the guidelines framed by the civic body for granting permissions for Ganesh festival and other celebrations on roads. To ensure smooth traffic movement, the civic body has, this year, decided to not allow any celebrations on small crowded roads and permit only 1/3rd portion of any wide public road to be used for festivities.

Additional government pleader Rajesh Behere informed the court that the city police commissionerate has issued a circular asking the heads of all police stations to ensure strict compliance with noise control regulations and take prompt action against violators.
Thane mayor Ashok Vaity had also called for a meeting of local corporators on Saturday.
