The Netherlands, Windmills do create noise nuisance
AMSTERDAM - wind mills do cause noise nuisance.
In contrast to
what governments and operators claim, people who are living in the proximity of a windmill can hear the sound
of the wind along mill up to a distance of two kilometres.
Thereby the noise standards are exceeded, this result has become clear from a research
of Frits van den Berg on which he will make his promovendus next week Friday at the University Groningen.
After sunset more wind in the higher air layers arises
according to van den Berg, where the blades of the wind mill are.
The blades twist then faster than at daytime, as a result of
which the sound becomes louder.
People living close to a windmill define the sound as 'an
endless train, the undertow or taking off 747', the research worker
says.
At daytime the sound is less loud and it is absorbed by other sounds like traffic noise.
Van den Berg thinks that the nuisance
can be reduced by modifying the score of the blades continuously when
the mill is in operation. Also the mills could turn slower.
